The right approach
- Calculate your ideal weight: to give yourself the best possible chance, work out your ideal weight. A good indicator is body mass index (BMI). Aim for a BMI of between 18.5 and 25, bearing in mind that BMI is calculated by dividing your weight (in kg) by your height (in metres) squared.
Calculate your Body Mass Index:
- Eat a balanced diet: do not disrupt your usual diet if you already eat healthily. Eat a varied diet, with an emphasis on dairy products, vegetables and fruit. Do not eliminate any food types, but generally reduce anything containing a lot of fat, salt or sugar. Drink water regularly to keep yourself hydrated, without waiting until you feel thirsty.
Do not skip meals: now is the time to get into the habit of regular mealtimes, something you will need to pursue with your child in a few months’ time.
- Be active: maintaining reasonable physical activity is recommended – if you take fitness classes, continue with them. If not, the equivalent of half an hour of walking each day is a good start. This is also a good time to take up swimming again. It may become your favourite sport for the next nine months!
- Check: that you have all the necessary vaccines, and consult your doctor about any risks of exposure from those around you, particularly in relation to rubella, measles, mumps and chickenpox, which you should protect yourself against for your own sake and your baby’s. Your doctor will be able to advise you and proceed as necessary.
