Feeling broody

At first, you will think about your future baby a lot and visualise what it will be like to be a parent.

It takes two to be a parent! All the more reason to prepare for it together.

Calculate your optimal weight

Put all the odds on your side by finding your optimal weight. The body mass index (BMI) is a helpful benchmark. Aim for a BMI between 18.5 and 25. It is calculated by dividing your weight (in kg) by your height, squared (in metres).

Eat a balanced diet!

Don’t make any dramatic changes to your usual diet if you already eat healthily. Eat a varied diet, emphasising dairy products, vegetables, and fruit. Don’t eliminate any foods, but do generally reduce foods that are too fatty, salty, or sweet. Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly before you get thirsty. Don’t skip meals: start making good habits by eating regularly, something you will carry on doing with your child in a few months.

Our answers to your questions

  • Their effectiveness has yet to be proved. These diets are restrictive, unpleasant to follow, and often unbalanced. After all, there’s only a fifty-fifty chance of getting it wrong!

Keep moving!

Within reason, staying physically active is recommended: if you already workout to stay fit, don’t stop. Otherwise, the equivalent of half an hour of walking a day is a good start. This is also a good time to start swimming again, since it may well become your favourite sport in the next 9 months!

Make sure your vaccinations are up to date.

Check in with your doctor to make sure that you have not been exposed to a serious disease. This includes protecting you and your baby from rubella, measles, mumps, and chicken pox. Your doctor will advise you and take care of any additional steps.
