The emotional and hormonal upheaval of birth can lead to a very natural period of “baby blues”: do not wait until you reach “burn-out” before seeking help. Talk to your child’s doctor about this, to other mums, or to women in your family who can reassure you and help you overcome this hurdle.
- When baby is four months old, you can begin your perineal retraining. This is a good way to get back in touch with your body and is very important for the rest of your life as a woman.
- Take care of your breasts with moisturisers. Finish off your shower with a blast of cold water to give your skin its tone back. You can accompany these little rituals with quick exercises intended to work the pectoral muscles which support your breasts.
- Do not try to lose your excess kilos too quickly. Take up gentle physical activity again, for example walking for half an hour every day. Walks with baby in a pushchair will be enjoyable occasions. Looking after baby is a sport in itself: to avoid hurting your back, take care to bend your knees when you lift them out of their playpen.
- Swimming is also a very good sport for getting your health back, including during the breastfeeding period. Swimming pools often organise baby swimming sessions which can offer wonderful moments of play and bonding with your child.
- A trip to the hairdresser’s or buying some new clothes will help you to feel like yourself again, as well as giving you a little moment of peace just to yourself.
